Energy Saving Tips for Daily Living
Here’s just a few simple things you can do that will benefit your bank balance and, in most cases, make your home warmer and healthier too!
Take that old, energy guzzling beer fridge to your local authority for recycling and save up to $150 per year.
Turn your heated towel rail off in warmer weather and save up to $80 per year - or even better, install a timer!
Wash your clothes in cold water and you could save up to $270 per year.
Replace four of the most frequently used standard light bulbs in your home with energy efficient light bulbs and save at least $65 a year.
Try and run your dishwasher or washing machine only with a full load.
Use thermostats and timers on your heaters so they switch on when you need them and switch off once they reach the right temperature.
Capture & use as much FREE sunlight as possible...keep windows clean and free of overhanging branches AND dry your washing on the line.
Check the thermostat on your hot water cylinder is set to the recommended 60°C temperature.
Use the best heating solution for your needs e.g. fan heaters are great for a short bursts, radiant heaters are better for bigger rooms and column heaters offer background heat.
When replacing any appliance consider buying the model with the highest number of ENERGY STARS. These are the most energy efficient, and cheapest to run.
Check you’re on the best electricity rate for your circumstances —most power companies offer a cheaper daily fixed charge /higher usage unit price for those living alone and using less than the household average of 10,000 kWh per year.
