Energy Saving Tips for Daily Living


Here’s just a few simple things you can do that will benefit your bank balance and, in most cases, make your home warmer and healthier too!

yes_tick.gif Take that old, energy guzzling beer fridge to your local authority for recycling and save up to $150 per year.

yes_tick.gif Turn your heated towel rail off in warmer weather and save up to $80 per year - or even better, install a timer!

yes_tick.gif Wash your clothes in cold water and you could save up to $270 per year.

yes_tick.gif Replace four of the most frequently used standard light bulbs in your home with energy efficient  light bulbs and save at least $65 a year.

yes_tick.gif Try and run your dishwasher or washing machine only with a full load.

yes_tick.gif Use thermostats and timers on your heaters so they switch on when you need them and switch off once they reach the right temperature.

yes_tick.gif Capture & use as much FREE sunlight as possible...keep windows clean and free of overhanging branches AND dry your washing on the line. 

yes_tick.gif Check the thermostat on your hot water cylinder is set to the recommended 60°C temperature. 

yes_tick.gif Use the best heating solution for your needs e.g. fan heaters are great for a short bursts, radiant heaters are better for bigger rooms and column heaters offer background heat.

yes_tick.gif When replacing any appliance consider buying the model with the highest number of ENERGY STARS. These are the most energy efficient, and cheapest to run.

yes_tick.gif Check you’re on the best electricity rate for your circumstances —most power companies offer a cheaper daily fixed charge /higher usage unit price for those living alone and using less than the household average of 10,000 kWh per year.
