Heating Subsidies

Heat Pump Funding for New Zealanders
If you meet the eligibility criteria, you could receive a home heating grant that covers:
● Up to 80% off the cost of an energy-efficient heat pump through EnergySmart.
● Supply and installation of a high performance heat pump - maximum subsidy of up to $2,500.

Heat Pump Eligibility Criteria
● Own and occupy a home built before 2008.
● Have a Community Services Card OR live in an area identified as low-income (NZ Deprivation Index 8, 9 or 10) - you can check your SDI level through EnergySmart.
● Your home must not already have a fixed form of heating in the main living area (e.g. wood burner, heat pump, or flued gas heater).
● Your home must be properly insulated first – ceiling and underfloor insulation needs to be up to standard before a heating grant can be approved.

Frequently Asked Questions - Heat Pump Subsidies
Can I get both insulation and heating subsidies?
Yes – but insulation must be installed first (and funded through the same Warmer Kiwi Homes programme if eligible) before a heating grant can be approved.
Do I get to choose the heat pump brand or model?
We install EECA-approved heat pumps that are tested for high performance, efficiency, and suitability for your home. Our team will recommend the best option for your space.
What if I already have a heater?
The subsidy is only available if your main living area doesn’t have a fixed heating source (e.g. no heat pump, wood burner, or flued gas heater currently installed).
How long does the process take?
Once we’ve confirmed your eligibility and completed your home assessment, installation is typically scheduled within a few weeks, depending on regional demand.
Can I still apply if my home has portable heaters?
Yes – the subsidy is available if your home does not have a fixed heating source in the main living area. Portable electric heaters don’t count as fixed heating, so you may still be eligible.
What type of heat pumps are included in the grant?
The grant covers only EECA-approved heat pumps, which are selected for their energy efficiency and performance in NZ homes. EnergySmart will recommend a model that suits your home’s size and layout.
Can I choose where the heat pump is installed?
The heat pump must be installed in the main living area of the home – typically the lounge or family room. This is a requirement of the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme to ensure maximum impact.
Will I need to pay anything upfront?
In most cases, you’ll pay only the remaining balance not covered by the subsidy. EnergySmart will confirm costs with you upfront and help manage the funding process from start to finish.
